I hope my previous post about My Fake Rolex in Shanghai Experience helps readers get the best bargain while shopping for a fake watch. My next post is yet another experience after Moving to China.
Traffic Accident in Shanghai
The streets of Shanghai are always bustling with people, bikes and cars. While I did have a notion that there could never be a traffic accident in Shanghai, thanks to the great traffic system, this experience made me think otherwise.
It was half past ten at night and i was on my way back home. While I am walking towards Nanjing Rd. to get to the Metro, SLAM!!, i hear a big bang and the next moment a guy is lying dead still on the street with this e-bike lying next to him. A taxi had rammed into him at the cross road (there aren’t any traffic lights in these by-lanes). By the noise, all the people gathered around the spot thought he’d been a goner. But much to our relief, he was neither injured nor did he pass out. While everyone was busy trying to call the authorities, I recollected spotting a Cop Car a couple of blocks away. I ran back and got them at the spot. Although conveying the whole message was a problem, knowing the animated people we (Indians) are, it didn’t take more than a minute to do so.
While at the spot, I made a quiet exit because I had been cautioned by fellow foriegners and locals about the possibility of getting into trouble while helping people out of a problem. During my exit I had a quick chat with another foreigner and he had a whole new perspective of the accident. He was of the opinion that the injured guy was faking it so that he could earn a quick buck and that it was quite common to see these sights in China.
A weird thing I did notice was the locals wouldn’t touch the guy, neither would they try to check if he was alright. I still haven’t figured out why. But that was one hell of a night in Shanghai and one of my many experiences in this great city. I hope the guy made it through that night and nothing bad happened.
So what do you learn from this one: If you’re not a local, try to help out but never get too involved. You never know what you might get yourself into.
